Hans Holbein in England

Lecturer: Angela Cox

Hans Holbein was the first great painter to work in England. He first came in 1526 for 15 months and then returned in 1532. A few years later, he was court painter to Henry V111, a position he retained until his death in 1543. His phenomenal abilities as a portrait painter were constantly in demand from the king and leading figures at court. It is his portrait of Henry V111 – magnificent and awesome – that is the defining image of that period in Tudor history.
