The Fauves: Trial by Fire

The first important Art Group of the twentieth Century in France, they worked as a group from 1903 – 1907 and greatly influenced many later artists. Some of the paintings exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1905 had such astonishingly bright colours that they received the nickname ‘Wild Animals’. They tried to paint pictures of comfort, joy and pleasure, and painted objects in unnatural colour. This lecture will show paintings by a number of the leading artists who exhibited, and explain why they were so controversial
