The Work of Angels

Tom Duncan - Art historian, national and international lecturer will talk about The Book of Kells and Its Contemporaries.

The arrival of Christianity in Ireland brought about a fusion of cultures. During the 5th and 6th centuries AD these traditions were pressed into the production of a wide variety of liturgical objects for the new rituals of the recently established Irish Church.

Great works of art such as the Ardagh Chalice were created and, above all, the Book of Kells was produced in large numbers and considered one of the principal glories of early mediæval art. In their day considered. to quote one mediæval source, Giraldus Cambrensis, to be the work "not of men, but of Angels".
