John Singer Sargent: An Unlikely War Artist
Lecturer: Mary Alexander
Sargent's response to the atrocities of the First World War was internalised and characteristically enigmatic, but his fearless observation skills at the Somme and bold interpretation of the official brief resulted in Gassed, which was voted the Picture of the Year at the 1919 Royal Academy exhibition. We will explore his work and thoughts at this time, as expressed in his letters.
